Early Stage Building Optimization

Optimizing buildings in early stages is far from trivial and in this course, we look at different methods to optimize all aspects of a building, even in the earliest of stages.

We will optimize common parameters like U-values, room depth, glass area, shadings, and window according to the following methods and concepts:

  • Simple box modelling according to ASHRAE 209
  • Mass modelling according to ASHRAE 90.1
  • External irradiance modelling
  • Custom optimization methods like improved Shoeboxer
  • Fixed shading optimization

The optimization process will be based upon common direct and indirect optimization metrics like useful illuminance, energy usage, thermal comfort and daylighting and can be used for certification systems like BREEAM and LEED.

Max Tillberg is CEO of EQUA Solutions AB (Sweden) and has a M.Sc. in Engineering. Max has worked as a consultant in indoor climate, HVAC, building optimization, daylight and various environmental certification systems for over 20 years.
